Exploding Zones (Album Release) / Gertrude Atherton / Muffin

  • Myrtle 134 Waterman Avenue East Providence, RI, 02914 United States (map)

Exploding Zones is an experimental space rock trio emerging from the grit of Providence, Rhode Island. Featuring Mike Duffy (guitar/vocals), Christopher Kelley (bass), and Eric Smith (drums), the band fuses heavy, psychedelic atmospheres with the raw power of fuzzed-out 90s alt-rock. Their debut album, Water Motor / Gong Bell, is a sonic collision of tight rhythms, searing riffs, and experimental noise. It’s space rock with a heavy pulse—visceral, distorted, and meticulously crafted. The most recent release of Sun Pill in January 2026 marks a pivotal shift for Exploding Zones, transitioning from the mechanical, industrial focus of their debut toward a sound that is more expansive, atmospheric, and—true to the title—bleached by a harsh, psychedelic light.

Gertrude Atherton is a Providence-based punk/grunge trio that’s been haunting the Rhode Island scene since 2011. Fronted by Shannon Le Corre (guitar/vocals), the band specializes in high-velocity storytelling and sonic confrontation. Blending the raw edge of 90s grunge with a fierce punk spirit, their music serves as a vessel for the forgotten and the surreal—expect tales of historical women, avian transformations, and visceral, "yelled" narratives. Whether they’re channeling the all-female grunge underground or the heavy atmosphere of the local scene, Gertrude Atherton delivers a sound that is as sharp as a beak and twice as loud. Their new album, Gossip, is out now on all platforms. Explore the archives, including Isle of Lost Skulls, via Bandcamp.

MuffinMuffin is a feminist punk powerhouse hailing from The Creative Capital of Providence, fueled by a cocktail of rage, sarcasm, and zero patience for the status quo. What started as a Riot Grrrl cover band has evolved into an original sonic assault built on a collective pedigree of underground history, with roots stretching through the 90s/2000s PVD music scene. Muffin brings multi-dimensional mastery to the stage, drawing on years of shared experience in songwriting, underground photography, local burlesque, and talent management. Their sound fuses fem-led influences of the 90s to present day, channeling the raw and confrontational fury of punk the way it was meant to be played: loud, fast, and aggressively over it. Coming May 2026 Muffin will be releasing their debut EP Get Baked which will be available on Bandcamp, vinyl, and streaming services.
