DAN LILLEY & THE KEEPERS/THE FREE RADICALS

  • Myrtle 134 Waterman Avenue East Providence, RI, 02914 United States (map)

Dan Lilley & The Keepers are a seasoned rock ’n roll outfit with deep Rhode Island roots and no interest in slowing down. Fronted by Dan Lilley (vocals, guitar, harmonica) and backed by Mike “Scatman” Sullivan (lead guitar), Sean Finnerty (bass, vocals), and Gary St. Germaine (drums), the band blends '60s and '70s classic rock vibes with gritty originals and deep-cut covers that keep the beer flowing and the dance floor alive.

Since forming in 2011, The Keepers have become local staples, winning Motif Magazine’s Best Folk Act (though they’re definitely more rock than folk) and a Singer/Songwriter award for Lilley. Dan and Scatman have been melting faces together for over 40 years in bands like Tyger Tyger and The Flying Ditchdiggers, with guitar interplay that borders on telepathic.

Gary St. Germaine, a Hall of Fame drummer (Rizzz, Violin River, Forever Young), brings thunder and finesse, while the elusive Sean Finnerty anchors the groove with a résumé that includes country legend Eddie Zack and local heroes like Biscuit City.

As Sean puts it: “These days, it’s sex, drugs OR rock ’n roll… maybe two outta three on a good night.” Either way, The Keepers always deliver.

The Free Radicals serve up a unique blend of tasty musical Gumbo, brimming with flavor and heat. Although never derivative of one particular thing, their music seems to evoke embryonic journeys from the American South to San Francisco, to the Northeast with stops in Chicago and Macon, Georgia, and back again, and again. Guitarist Pete Vendettuoli is the voice, while brother Steve Vendettuoli (bass) and Gary St. Germain (drums) form a formidable rhythm section. Richard Sage paints pictures with keyboards. Their originals sound like nothing you’ve ever heard before, yet you could swear you’ve heard a thousand times before. The cover songs have been duly radicalized, metamorphosized, and stand as living breathing homages to legends like Dylan, Garcia, and Robert Johnson. Come out with your Rock & Roll shoes laced up, ready to dance.
